Ambient temperature

When carrying out infrared temperature measurement, the ambient temperature can influence the measurement, since infrared radiation may be reflected from the object or transmitted through it.

Incorrect measurements may arise if the ambient temperature is higher than that of the object to be measured. A typical example is measuring an object located in an oven, where the walls of the oven are hotter than the object itself. In order to compensate for the influence of ambient temperature, this is taken into account using a setting in the infrared measuring device. Even more accurate measurement results can be achieved if the ambient temperature is measured with a second device, in order to carry out an automated ambient temperature compensation.
